Get To Safety
The first and most important thing you need to do when your car breaks down is to make your car as safe as physically possible. If you are on a highway, you need to safely pull over to the shoulder or the furthest lane on your right you can. If you are on a smaller road, simply pulling off to the side and parking will suffice. Always put your hazard lights on, and if you are on the shoulder of the highway, you should get out of your car and wait even further away from it so if someone does hit it accidentally you will not be hit. Always try to make your car as visible as possible to other motorists without putting yourself in danger either.

Stay Calm
The most important thing to remember is that it is just a car, and as long as you and your passengers are safe, the problem can be overcome. Don't try to fix the car in the middle of the road, or do anything else as outlandish as that.
